Broad-spreading shrub with many thorny branches and dark, glossy green leaves.

White to pink to deep red, apple-like flowers
Early spring just before or with the leaves.
The new leaves are reddish-bronze when they first appear in the spring.
 
 
 
The fruit is a hard, sour, yellowish-green quince about 2½ inches in diameter. It contains pectin and can be used in making jellies.
 
 
  • 'Candicans' - Flowers are creamy-yellow with a pinkish tinge about 1½ inches in diameter.
  • 'Knap Hill Scarlet' - Flowers are scarlet, about 1½ inches in diameter. It is a low, horizontal-growing type.
  • 'Marmorata' - Coral flowers are about 1¾ inches in diameter.
  • 'Nivalis' - White flowers are approximately 1¼ inches in diameter lower growing than the type.
 
Branches brought indoors after Christmas will force into flower.
