Clematis heracieifolia
Tube Clematis
Southern Europe

subshrubs
2-5 feet tall
Fragrant, small blue tubular flowers are clustered in the leaf axils or at the tip of the thin stems - sepals are strongly reflexed
Late summer
Compound foliage of 3 leaflets, each leaflet is coarsely toothed.

Fluffy seed heads

Sprawling plant and will require staking. Clematis requires a warm top (full sun to partial shade on the vine) and a cool bottom (shade on the root zone).
  • 'Cote d'Azur' - Light blue flowers, similar to the species.
  • var. davidiana - violet-blue flowers, sepals less reflexed, showier than the species. This variety is dioecious while C. heracleifolia is monoecious. This selection leans toward a herbaceous quality and C. heracieifolia are subshrubs.
  • 'Wyevale' - Dark blue flowers with attractive crimped sepals.
