Spreading round-topped shrub or small tree with dense foliage
20 to 25’ in height by 15 to 20’ in width.
Small yellow flowers appear in compact clusters before the leaves open.
Very early spring
Opposite, simple, ovate to elliptic, 2 to 4” long, 3/4 to 11/2” wide. Dark green, glossy.
Foliage turns reddish in the fall but not showy.
 
Dark brown scaly, exfoliating bark.
The red, elongated cherry-like fruits (drupe) appear in mid-July. They may be used in making preserves.
 
 

  • 'Alba' - White fruit.
  • 'Aureo-elegantissima' - Variegated leaves, creamy white and tinged red.
  • 'Flava' - yellow fruiting form.
  • 'Nana' - Dwarf form.
  • 'Variegata' - Creamy white leaf margin.

Easy to force into bloom in the house in the winter
