Doronicum orientale
Caucasian Leopardsbane
4-7
Southern Europe and Asia Minor

Early blooming perennial of woods and shaded mountain rocks
18-24 inches tall and 12-18 inches wide
Yellow, solitary head, 2 inches wide on a peduncle 12-15 inches
long.
Early to mid-spring.
Alternate, basal leaves long-petioled, deeply cordate. The stem leaves are of two types: lower leaves are petiolate and subcordate, while the upper stem leaves are ovate, cordate clasping with those near the flower linear-lanceolate. All leaves are coarsely dentate.

  • 'Finesse' - Yellow-orange flowers with slender ray flowers, 15-18 inches tall.
  • 'Magnificum' - Large yellow flowers, 24-30 inches tall, early bloom.
  • 'Miss Mason' - This hybrid of D. orientale x D. austriacum has more persistent foliage than the species. It has an earlier bloom and a longer flowering period.
  • 'Spring Beauty' - This 15-18 inch cultivar has golden-yellow flowers.

Doronicum is not heat tolerant. The common name leopardsbane arose because arrows were once dipped in the juice of one species for hunting leopards.
