Large shrub or small tree, upright at first, then arching and spreading widely, forming a rounded outline.
12-20 feet tall with a spread of 20 or more feet
Flowers are yellowish-white, without petals, ½ inch long, very fragrant
Mid to late May
Leaves are alternate, simple, lanceolate, 1½-3 inches long, with an acute tip, dull green on top and silvery below.
Fall color is nonexistent.
 
Stems are scaly, silvery, somewhat thorny when young, developing a shreddy, basket weave pattern on older stems and trunk.
Fruit is an ovoid, yellow drupe covered with silvery scales, ¼ inch long edible, ripening in August- September
