Large tuft overtopped by stiff wheat-like spikes
2-3 feet tall
The flowers are produced in a stiff, compact spike that is 6-12 inches long and ½-1 inch wide. Flowers are blue-gray, becoming buff to brown with age. When mature, they resemble the fruit spikes of wheat.
Midsummer
The leaf blades are 18-24 inches long, ¾ inch wide, flat or inrolled. rigid and sharply pointed. Leaves are rough on the upper surface and smooth beneath. Margins are minutely hairy. The foliage has a light blue-gray color.
