Very narrow leaves and glabrous stems sometimes covered with a pale waxy "bloom" like that found on grapes. This distinguishes this species from other sunflowers.
 
 
 

The specific epithet, salicifolius, refers to the foliage which resembles that of the willow in the genus, Salix.
