Evergreen perennial of mountain woods and rocky places especially on calcareous soils.
 
Great variation in flower color, size and how early the flowers appear. Flowers consist of white petaloid sepals and bright yellow anthers.The center of the flower contains primitive looking carpels that illustrate a folded leaf blade which evolved to protect developing ovules.
Very early spring
Palmately lobed leaves. Less serrated than H. orientalis and are duller green. The stems are red spotted.
