Houttuynia cordata
Chameleon Plant
5-8
Japan

Mound spreading by rhizomes - herbaceous perennial of damp, shady places.
6-9 inches tall
The inflorescence is a ˝-1 inch long spike, which contains a cluster of small, petal-less yellow florets surrounded by four petal-like white bracts.
Early summer
The leaves of this species with the creeping rhizomes are alternate. They are ovate, 2-3 inches long, cordate and attractively variegated yellow, green, bronze and red. The variegation is very striking in full sun but does fade to greens and maroons in shaded sites.
