The large, bright yellow flowers, 2-3 inches wide, are solitary or in groups of 2-3. The flowers have 5 petals and 5 sepals with numerous, erect stamens that produce a powder puff appearance at the center of the flower. This species has 5 styles at the time of pollination, but in early anthesis the styles appear as one.
 
Opposite leaves are borne on 4 angled stems. The 2-4 inches long leaves are ovate-oblong to oblong in shape with a small point at the tip. The evergreen leaves are glabrous, have an entire margin and are glaucous on the lower surface.
