Dense, broadly pyramidal when young, becoming symmetrical, broad, flat-topped.
30-50 feet tall with a spread of 15-35 feet
Plants are monoecious. Staminate cones are clustered, purplish in color, becoming tan-brown.
 
Needles are borne in fascicles of 5 and 2-3 inches long, densely crowded on the ends of the branchlets, with smooth, entire margins, dark green in color.
 
 
Bark is smooth, silvery white to gray, becoming dark brown to nearly black and deeply fissured. Branches are very flexible, able to be tied into knots.
Cones are short-stalked, 3-6 inches long, erect when young, becoming spreading, light brown in color.
