Pinus mugo var. mugo
Mugo Pine, Swiss Mountain Pine
 
 

Low, broad-spreading to upright, bushy.
6-9 feet tall with a spread of 12-16 feet
Flowers are innocuocus.
 
Needles are borne in fascicles of 2 and 1-2 inches long, rigid and curved, margins finely toothed, with a prominent basal sheath about ½ inch long.
 
Buds are reddish-brown, ¼-½ inch long, encrusted with resin, appearing like “beer nuts.”
Bark is gray, scaly, with regular bumpy protuberances where the needles fell.
Cones are sessile to short-stalked, ¾-1½ inches long, borne solitary or in small clusters. Cones are not showy.
