Stiffly upright, densely pyramidal when young, becoming broad, flat-topped with a short trunk and low, stout, spreading branches.
50-60 feet tall with a spread of 20-40 feet
Plants are monoecious. Staminate cones are clustered, yellow in color, pistillate are yellow-green.
 
Needles are borne in fascicles of 2 and  4-6 inches long, very stiff and straight, sharply pointed, dark green in color.
 
 
Bark is dark brown with grayish ridges, appearing marbled, attractive.
Cones are solitary or clustered, 2-3 inches long, with large, 1 inch scales, keeled near the apex, often with a short prickle, tawny yellow becoming brown.
 
 

  • 'Pygmaea' - very slow growing, dense bush
  • 'Pyramidalis' - narrowly pyramidal plant
