2-3 feet tall, round growth habit with a 24 inches width
Violet-blue, long spike like racemes, densely flowered, 4-8 inches long corolla is violet or purple, while the calyx is reddish purple.
Summer
Opposite, lanceolate to oblong. crenate, obtuse or acute, rugose above and slightly pubescent beneath, basal leaves have short petioles, stem leaves sessile or often clasping, 3-6 inches.
 
Full sun and in a moist, well-drained soil
  • 'Blue Mound' - Pure blue flowers on 20 inches tall stems.
  • 'Blue Oueen' - Blue-violet flowers on stems 18-24 inches tall.
  • 'Lubeca' - Violet-blue flowers, 30 inches tall. The bloom period is several weeks longer than 'East Friesland. '
  • 'May Night' -  Karl Foerster introduced this cultivar in 1956. Indigo-blue flowers and is 18 inches tall.
  • 'East Friesland' - A much-branched plant which does not require staking. 18 inches tall. It has a dark violet flower color.
  • 'Primevere' - Blue-violet flowers, 18 inches tall.
  • 'Rose Queen' - Rose-pink flowers, 20-24 inches tall.
  • 'Viola Klose' - Has dark blue flowers and is 16-18 inches tall.
Salvia x superba is a hybrid of S. nemorosa x S. viillcaulis.
