18-24 inches tall with a 24 inches width
Flowers borne in terminal umbels, subtended by linear-lanceolate bracts flowers violet-purple, sometimes white, pink, or red, sepals bright green, somewhat turgid and inflated, 3 pubescent petals.
Late spring to midsummer.
Alternate, Iinear-Ianceolate, to 15 inches long, 1 inch wide, straplike leaves.

Tradescantia is named for the plant collector, John Tradescant, who on a plant collection trip to the United States, sent this genus back to England in the 17th century.
