
									
								
								
This genus consists of around 30 species of 
									
									
									herbaceous perennials and, occasionally, 
									subshrubs. They are native to both 
						
									tropical 
									and warm temperate zones in several parts of 
									the world. The name comes from 
								the Greek for "thorn" relating to those on the 
								edge of the foliage. Acanthus leaves are often 
								used to decorate classical sculptures such as 
								Corinthian columns.
