This is a genus with about 50 species of annuals, biennials, herbaceous perennials and a few shrubs. It includes garden lettuce (Lactuca sativa) as well was some common weed species. They are native to many parts of the world with many coming from the temperate zones of Eurasia or Southern Europe.
