Small tree with an upright spreading crown.

Opposite, trifoliate, terminal leaflet 3 to 5” long, 1 to 1 1/4” wide, lanceolate, pointed, saw-toothed, glabrous except on midrib and larger veins; lateral leaflets shorter with a 1/4” long petiolule, terminal petiolule 1/2 to 1” long, medium to dark green above, glaucous beneath; petiole glabrous, reddish, 2 to 6” long.
Bright red in October.
 
Smooth, gray, somewhat beech-like, and maintaining this character into old age.
