Silybum marianum Milk Thistle aka Holy Thistle   Southern Europe and Northern Africa Robust biennial of waste lands and is considered an invasive species in California.   Purple - Seeds are technically fruits called achenes.   Lustrous, white mottled and spiny leaves. They form a conspicuous rosette during the first year.
