Paul Aden registered this cultivar in 1982 as a hybrid of
Hosta montana 'Aureomarginata'
and H. 'Big Sam'. This giant (37
inches high) plant has deeply lobed, slightly rippled leaves that
come to a thin tip. It has pale lavender flowers.
According to
The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis
(2009), "Over the years, there has been some debate about
the difference between 'Mikado',
Hosta montana
macrophylla, and other similar cultivars. Whatever the
case, 'Mikado' and the others all make worthy additions to any
shade garden."
Similar cultivars include H. 'Big Boy', H. 'King
James', 'King Michael'
and Hosta montana macrophylla.
Seedlings include H. 'Blast Off' and H. 'Lakeside Maestro'.
