Sprinklers are attachments that fit on the end of hoses and diffuse the water flow into small streams. This helps deliver the water in a gentler fashion and more evenly over a wider area than the flow from the end of the hose. The down side may be that the finer spray will lose some of the water to evaporation and not to the roots of the plants.
