A hybrid of H. 'Blue Cadet' × H. venusta, this plant was registered by Paul Aden of New York in 1978.

According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "At maturity it is very difficult to distinguish 'Tiny Tears' from H. venusta and others such as 'Abiqua Miniature', 'Suzuki Thumbnail', 'Thumb Nail', and 'Tot Tot'."

"Plant is often connected with the species H. venusta, but it does not have ridges on the flower scape and it looks more like H. pulchella."
