2-5 feet Erect plant with basal leaves

Flowers large, pendulous borne in a one-sided raceme 1-2 feet long, corolla 3 inches long, purple or sometimes pink, white, rusty or yellow, throat generally spotted, lobes ciliate.

Late spring to early summer
alternate, leaves rugose, somewhat downy, the radical ones long-stalked and ovate, the stem leaves short-stalked or sessile, becoming smaller toward top of stem.
 

  • var. alba - White flowers, a good choice for brightening the shade areas of the garden.
  • 'Excelsior Hybrids - Flowers in pastel shades of pink, mauve, yellow or white are borne all around the spike, rather than on one side, 3-5 feet tall.
  • 'Foxy' - Can be used as an "annual", plants started in the greenhouse will flower the first summer, 30-40 inches tall.
  • 'Shirley Hybrids' - Many different flower colors, but the flowers are borne on only one side of the spike, 3-5 feet tall.
 
Note: All parts of the plant are poisonous if eaten as they contain the heart drug digitalis.
