This is the largest group of bulbous iris. The Dutch and Spanish types were bred from I. xiphium while the English iris come from the species, I. xiphoides. Dutch iris with their delicate flowers bloom the earliest followed by the fragrant flowers of the Spanish iris and the last to bloom are the English irises noted for their larger flowers with erect standards.

The Dutch and Spanish iris are tender and often need to be replaced frequently in temperate zones. English iris are a bit tougher and will survive mild winters but they are susceptible to a virus.
