Hosta longipes 'Ogon'

According to The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "..."Ogon" is not a cultivar name, but the Japanese word for gold. In Japan gold-leaved seedlings of species are often listed with the name 'Ogon'. In such cases, the Japanese common name should be added to "Ogon" to create a cultivar name. Hence, H. rectifolia 'Ogon' becomes H. rectifolia 'Ogon Tachi'.

This is a golden-yellow colored variety of the species H. longipes from Japan. It is cited as the pollen parent of H. 'Red Veins'.

An article by W. George Schmid in The Hosta Journal  (1996 Vol. 27 No. 2) states that this is a duplicate, incorrect or outdated name for Hosta 'Ogon Koba'.

Mikiko Lockwood in an article on The Hosta Library titled, A Little About Japanese Hosta Terms defines the term ogon or oogon as gold or yellow.

Many hostas in Japan have been given the simple name 'Ogon' which would indicate that the plant has yellow or gold colored foliage. There are at least 11 such plants with that name, all from different species including:

  1. H. capitata 'Ogon'
  2. H. cathayana 'Ogon'
  3. H. hypoleuca 'Ogon'
  4. H. kikutii polyneuron 'Ogon'
  5. H. longipes 'Ogon'
  6. H. montana 'Ogon'
  1. H. nakaiana 'Ogon'
  2. H. pycnophylla 'Ogon'
  3. H. rectifolia 'Ogon'
  4. H. tsushimiensis 'Ogon'
  5. H. venusta 'Ogon'.
