 Royal Horticultural Society's Garden at Wisley is Britain’s best
loved garden. It contains 97 hectares (240 acres) offering a
fascinating blend of the beautiful with practical and
innovative design and cultivation techniques. For many, it is
the beauty and tranquility of the garden that captures the
imagination, with its richly planted borders, luscious rose
gardens and the exotica of the glasshouses, but a closer look
reveals the real value of Wisley.
In the trials fields, the
finest flowers and
vegetables are identified from the
countless new introductions. Elsewhere in the garden,
cultivation techniques, such as
composting or pleaching, are
tried and tested, and a series of model gardens answers the
needs of a variety of conditions and circumstances.
 Wisley demonstrates British
gardening at its best in all aspects. Highlights include the
Alpine Meadow carpeted with
daffodils in Spring, Battleston
Hill, brilliant with
rhododendrons in early Summer, the
heathers and Autumnal tints. All this together with the
Glasshouses, Trials and Model Gardens are all features for
which the Garden is renowned. Facilities include Restaurant
and Cafeteria, The Wisley Shop containing the finest
collection of horticultural books in the world as well as
other gifts and The Wisley Plant Centre with over 10,000
varieties of plant for sale.

In 1878,
George Ferguson Wilson purchased the property and established
"The Oakwood Experimental Garden." Under his leadership, the
garden became known for collections of
lillies,
gentians,
Japanese
iris,
primulas
and water plants.
Sir Thomas Hanbury bought the estate at the death of Mr.
Wilson in 1903. He donated it to the Royal Horticultural
Society for use as a demonstration garden.
 Special areas throughout the facility range from perennial
borders, fruit fields, vegetable gardens, rock gardens, water
features and many more. Trial gardens display collections of
new and improved cultivars of ornamental plants. A laboratory
on the grounds researches pest, disease and other garden
problems.
Wisley garden holds National Collections of
Crocus,
Colchicum, Daboecia,
Epimedium,
Erica,
Daphne,
Galanthus,
Hosta and
Pulmonaria.

We have visited this garden several
times and hope to return to it many times in the future. It is
a full range garden having just about everything a
horticulturist could want to see. Beautiful ornamental gardens
of all types including beds and borders, rock gardens,
ponds
and display beds. Practical gardens for vegetables and fruit.
They also have small landscape display gardens to help the
novice gain ideas. Included on the grounds is a full-service
garden center. Wow!
