These roses started as a sport of Rosa centifolia in the 1600s. They share the same characteristics as the parent species except the flowers have a green or reddish brown "moss" that covers the flower stems and sepals. This material is generally fragrant and sticky to the touch.

The moss roses bloom one time in the early summer in colors of white, pink, crimson and reddish purple.
