In the late nineteenth century, the polyantha roses were introduced as a cross between the Oriental species, Rosa multiflora and hybrid tea roses. They are low growing shrubs (up to 2 feet) and, as their Greek name implies, they have many flower clusters per stem. They were a precursor of the modern floribunda types. In general, they are more cold hardy than hybrid tea roses.
